Portraiture

Taking inspiration from Old Masters such as Reynolds and Gainsborough, Fritha enjoys producing classic oil portraits on canvas, often with a contemporary twist.

Liz beside Richmond Bridge (2020)

Oil on canvas, 16" x 20"

Liz sat for a couple of hours, then I continued using photographs as reference. I added the background using my photographs of her local area, East Twickenham riverside.

Self Portrait (2024)

Oil on canvas, 16" x 20"

Painted from life, in the mirror.

Self Portrait (2025)
Oil on canvas, 30cm x 42cm

A painting from a photograph 'selfie' of 2022.

Robert & Hudson (2025)

Oil on canvas, 12" x 16"

Posthumous portrait from a photograph, for Robert's widow / Hudson's mother.

Fritha and the Snow Goose (2020)

Oil on canvas, 16" x 20"

Antique portraits often feature the sitter holding something pertinent to them. The name 'Fritha' is most commonly recognised as a character in a Paul Gallico book, about a girl who rescues an injured snow goose.  "Duck" was also my first word!

Fritha on Richmond Hill (2020)

Oil on canvas, 16" x 20"

A composite painting of two photographs, one of myself in a dress I made and the other a photograph of Turner's view of the Thames from Richmond Hill, a short walk uphill from my home.

Sue and Amy (1995)

Oil on paper, 84cm x 60cm

My A-Level Art final piece of our two regular life models. I really enjoyed exaggerating the unexpected colours in the skin, such as green, blue or purple.

Roro (2025)

Oil on canvas, 16" x 20"

Posthumous portrait from a photograph, for his widow.

Ashley (2024)

Oil on canvas, 10" x 12"

Ashley avoids cameras, so this was painted from an old photograph. Surprisingly, despite hating his photograph being taken, he was pleased with the painting.

Fuscia (2018)

Charcoal and chalk on paper

A life drawing done at 'Drink & Draw' in Surbiton.
